I would like to share a story that captures the heart of what this ministry is truly about.
Leslie Konrad was a long-time member of Christ the King and of this group. She passed away in 2024, and at the time of her death, she had been working on a baby blanket for one of her grandchildren. Her family reached out and asked if someone in our group could possibly complete her last project. Mary Rose Martino was happy to take up that task. She knitted the blanket beautifully, and it was difficult to notice where Leslie’s stitches ended and Mary Rose’s began — a quiet and lovely sign of a love that was carried forward together.
I was fortunate to meet one of Leslie’s daughters, Kate Persinger, and present her with this beautifully completed keepsake. It is our hope that her family will treasure it always, for it holds within it not only Leslie’s love for her family, but also the spirit of this community that refused to let that love go unfinished. Leslie is deeply missed, but her loving spirit lives on in the work of hands joined together in prayer and purpose.
That spirit also extends beyond our own community. We create items for our neighbors served by SSJNC, bringing the same warmth and care to those who need it most. Every stitch is a small act of discipleship.
I am so proud to be a member of this generous, giving, caring group of people who share their many gifts and talents for the benefit of others. Our ministry is open to all ages — and if you have never picked up a pair of knitting needles & crochet hooks, don’t let that stop you. We provide the yarn, the lessons, and the friendship. Together, our main endeavor is to make items for SSJNC that provide warmth; blankets, afghans, hats, mittens, ponchos and sweaters. Each one handmade with love and offered as a tangible reminder to someone hurting that they are not alone and that they are prayed for. If you have a friend or family member who could use a little extra comfort, please stop by the parish office to select one as a gift.
If you feel called to join us — whether you can meet in person or would prefer to participate from home — please contact the Parish Office for more information. Yarn donations are also always welcome, especially if you are cleaning out drawers and have yarn you no longer need. Come share your hands, your heart, and your time with us.
