A Visible Sign of God’s Love

At Christ the King Parish, we offer approximately 25 ministries. These include community outreach initiatives, service-oriented efforts, and programs that deepen faith through study and small group Gospel discussion. While some parishes may boast longer lists, one California parish lists over 50 ministries; our goal is not to hold the record for the most number of ministries. Instead, we aim to offer ministries intentionally designed to meet the needs of our unique community, encouraging deeper engagement and a stronger relationship with Christ. Sometimes, less is more when done with purpose and love.

In this issue, we highlight the Bereavement Ministry, which provides compassionate support to families planning a funeral for a loved one. Rooted in the traditions of the Catholic faith, this ministry walks with families through grief while helping them prepare a meaningful funeral Mass that honors their loved one’s life in Christ.

Two dedicated women lead this ministry. Annmarie Riordan shares, “My devotion to the Lord, understanding of the Mass, and love of scripture have always been foundational. Being part of this ministry has deepened my compassion and awareness of how to support others in grief.”

Merri Votta has served for over 12 years and says her faith has grown exponentially. “I now hold a rock-solid belief in the resurrection and a deep appreciation for our faith traditions. I pray that every funeral Mass is a visible sign of God’s love.” She continued, “Burying the dead is one of the seven corporal works of mercy, and the grace that flows from this ministry is powerful.”

This ministry also offers advanced planning to individuals and their family members. Pre-planning a funeral Mass allows individuals time to reflect on their faith, and then choose readings and music that hold personal meaning. It also eases the burden on loved ones during a difficult time. You may find this ministry deeply fulfilling if you’re a good listener with a compassionate heart.
