Faith that Serves

The beginning of a new year often brings thoughts of resolutions. Whether you embrace them or not, January naturally invites reflection and fresh perspective. It can be an ideal time to consider a new path, or to learn more about an opportunity you may have previously given only passing thought. With that spirit in mind, we share this week’s reflection, offered by Pat Barrea, a parishioner of our neighboring parish, Holy Eucharist in Cherry Hill. Pat’s connection to Christ the King is through the Knights of Columbus, where he has been a member since 1995 and serves in the same Marian Council as some of our CTK parishioners.
Pat recalls entering church one day and noticing the Knights collecting donations for a charity. That moment sparked his curiosity, and he later learned that the Knights of Columbus is the largest Catholic fraternal organization in the world. Founded on the core principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism, the Knights are dedicated to serving those in need while strengthening parish life. Through participation in and leadership of charitable events, Pat says he has gained a deeper appreciation of what it truly means to live out his Catholic faith. Just as importantly, the Knights foster a “family-first” atmosphere by welcoming members’ families into many of their activities.
Pat’s faith has grown stronger through active participation. His relationship with Christ has become a steady source of hope, courage, and love, inspiring him to serve others. He speaks especially about witnessing God’s presence through acts of charity, including a fundraising effort for LARC School, which serves children with severe disabilities. After the drive, Pat had the opportunity to meet the students and staff, an experience he describes as unforgettable. Seeing the children’s joy and resilience, despite their daily challenges, left a lasting impression on his heart.
You may have already encountered the Knights of Columbus here at CTK, assisting at last year’s outdoor Mass and BBQ, selling Easter flowers, or NJ Right to Life raffle tickets. You’ll see them again soon, as they will be selling hoagies at all Masses the weekend of February 8; just in time for Super Bowl weekend. We invite you to take a moment to speak with a local Knight. That simple conversation may be the beginning of a meaningful and life-changing journey of faith and service.
