The next SSJ food pantry date is Thursday, June 20, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
In preparation for our local mission launch and to familiarize myself with all of the Center’s services, I served at the food pantry in April. The day was both enlightening and enjoyable. The Sisters and veteran pantry volunteers warmly greeted me and provided clear directions on the jobs and timeline for the day. We unloaded the truck from the food bank in the morning and packed bags with dry goods, toiletry essentials, and frozen meats. By going to the Center, I gained an insight into the types of items that are most helpful to the population served by the Center and what size is best to donate. For instance, the Latino neighbors do not eat green beans for the simple fact that they are not grown in their countries! However, dry beans, white rice, pasta, and sugar-free cereals are appreciated. Likewise, when donating feminine products, sanitary pads are requested. While bulk sizes are cost-effective for single families, the Center can aid more neighbors with family-sized groceries.
The food distribution portion of the day runs from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Sister Mary quickly points out that volunteers are not required to stay the entire day; any time given is a gift. Reusable grocery bags and old T-shirts to repurpose the bags are always in demand. Donations are accepted Monday through Friday at the Center.
If you’re interested in serving at the Center but have questions about the local area or are considering joining the bag sewing team, contact Cheryl Judge. If you’re still uncomfortable with the drive into Camden, Cherry Hill Food Pantry is located in a residential area and always appreciates our parishioners’ assistance.
