Servant Leadership

This summer, I had the opportunity to serve at Bethlehem Farm, a Catholic community in West Virginia. At first, I was hesitant to attend the high school service trip, but I soon realized how this work would change my life, and I can sum up this week in two words, “worth it.”

During the week, we visited the nearby towns, doing house repairs for the community members who needed assistance. Not only did I learn how to use a drill, but I also learned values like open-mindedness, respect, and perseverance. The days in the sun on metal roofs were hot and tiring, but the connections we made with the community members were worth every ounce of effort we gave. The stories they shared about their lives, struggles, and triumphs encouraged me to work as hard as possible to support them. Additionally, the practical knowledge I gained of tools, gardening, and cooking benefits my daily life.

As a young woman, I have often found my leadership opportunities to be limited. However, my time at Merion Mercy Academy has transformed me into someone who strives to be a servant leader, reflecting Christ’s love and mission through community work. My all-girls catholic education has instilled in me the belief that serving others is the highest form of leadership. It has also shown me how rewarding it can be to seize a service opportunity. I am deeply grateful for my countless chances at Merion to lead by example. These experiences have broadened my understanding of leadership and shown me the profound impact of service on personal growth.
