The Value of Giving

Embracing an attitude of gratitude for what we have received from God’s bounty opens us to knowing that our gifts are meant to be shared. Depending on the situation, your gift of time, talent, or treasure may have powerful and life-altering effects for you and the recipient. As the former Director of Development (DOD) for the Camden Diocese, I was blessed to oversee the fundraising and subsequent organizational recipients of the Annual Appeal.

It was inspiring to witness how the Catholic Charities’ portion of the Appeal donations helped to meet the needs of the poor: feeding the hungry, supporting those struggling to pay their rent or mortgage, as well as providing shelter, furniture, household items, and clothing to legal immigrants seeking a better life in South Jersey.

The chaplains who bring the Bread of Life to hospitalized patients, many battling despair and desperation due to a health crisis, bring hope through the Most Blessed Sacrament. During an illness, I experienced the blessing and joy of the Eucharist when a chaplain visited me. The value of the Hospital Chaplaincy ministry is priceless.

Coming from a family with six children, my parents struggled to send all of us to Catholic school. Likewise, in my role as DOD, I met with school officers and students, and I can assure you that this need continues today. A gift to the Appeal, now called South Jersey Catholic Ministries Appeal (SJCMA), can bridge the tuition gap.

Witnessing the many organizations, ministries, and communities bettered through the work of the Appeal and personally experiencing its grace, I continue to honor the commitment I made 25 years ago to support this initiative generously.

Your gift to SJCMA will cast a wide net. Like the miracle of the loaves and fishes, the love you share in your donation continues to grow in the hearts of those you serve. As you ponder with gratitude your blessings this Lent, I hope you will find it in your heart to choose the South Jersey Catholic Ministries Appeal as a valuable ministry worthy of your support.
