In order to be baptized, both infants and adults need sponsors. Sponsors are often called godparents in the case of infants. A sponsor “helps the baptized person to lead a Christian life.” Therefore, the sponsor must himself be a member in good standing of the Catholic Church. Only one sponsor is required. If two sponsors are chosen, then one must be a man and the other a woman. The second sponsor may belong to another Christian denomination.
Many parishes require the sponsors to present letters from their local parishes attesting to their eligibility. We allow sponsors to self-attest using an online form. They are asked four questions:
- Will you help the baptized person lead a Christian life?
- Do you yourself lead a Christian life?
- Are you a Catholic who has been confirmed and has already received the most holy sacrament of the Eucharist?
- Are you at least 16 years of age?
